Did anyone watch the Channel 4 3- part documentary on Dementia recently? I did and here's my view on it -
First of all the 1st programme was aired at 9pm and the last 2 were then aired at 11pm. I don't know the reasoning behind this, I tweeted Channel 4 looking for a reply but nothing yet. I was quite upset about this especially when at 10pm one night there was a repeat programme on, that I had watched a good while ago. I don't know if I'm just feeling upset about this because of my personal connection to this programme? But I was happy to see something on TV hopefully able to show the world what Alzheimer's is about, I think Channel 4 could have done this 3 parter more justice and just goes to show that if something is not 'trendy enough' or not enough people care then it gets flung on the back burner.
Anyway putting that aside I did enjoy these programmes. I found I could relate to many people on the show.
The first programme concentrated on the elderly in a care home and trying to live in the world The Alzhiemers has reverted them back to. It has to be said that the staff at this particular nursing home were outstanding. They embraced the lives of the people they were caring for and helped make the last moments of their life enjoyable and relaxing, I don't think anyone could ask for anything better.
The second programme looked at how Alzheimer's effects the family as a whole. This is where I started to relate to people. Some people accepting the fact their loved one with Alzheimer's has gone, and just needing and wanting to make their life as comfortable as possible!
The third programme looked at marriage and how it effects a relationship. How Alzheimer's slowly steals away the person who you planned on spending the rest of your life with! This episode also touched on aggression, again this is something I've had to deal.
The programmes highlighted, many stages of Alzheimer's that we will all have to deal with. The main thing I got from these programmes is this we still do not know enough about this illness and why it effects everyone in different ways? Why do some people get angry and others don't? So many unanswered questions about this illness. Dementiaville was a very well produced programme, if on,y it had been kept on at prime time viewing and maybe more people would be aware of what it is like to live with a loved one suffering with some sort of Dementia.
